Firefox Users Are Not Worthy of RM 1 Million

... or, to be precise, non-IE users are not worthy of TM's RM 1 Million reward.

I'm sure most of us have heard or seen TM's latest ad for the 1 million ringgit customer relations campaign, featuring Malaysia's favourite millionaire Jalalludin Hassan. Basically, you have to answer a series of questions regarding your personal and private information such as (Q.16C) whether you have STD, among others. Then you pray hard that you'll win the million dollars and that no spammers will get hold of your contact details and spending habits.

I actually first came across the ad when I was using the TMonline service on my Firefox. Eager to know what it was all about, I clicked through and Walla!

What do you know? Non compatible browser detected. Thinking that the questionnaires might be using some kind of fancy schmancy Java-ActiveX-XML-ASP-WTF embedded multimedia plugin, I switched over to IE7 for a try (gasp!). Here is the front page in all its glory, strangely titled Landing Page:

I gave IE7 a run but did not really find anything that otherwise wouldn't play well on Firefox. Just a series of questions with regular form controls divided into pages. Out of curiosity, and inherent dislike for IE, I was determined to find a way around the browser restriction.

I was quite sure that there must be a way to spoof the website via user-agent switching. A quick check at Firefox Central turned up at least three extensions for that purpose, out of which I settled with the User Agent Switcher. A few clicks, a few seconds and a restart later...

Look Ma, no IE!

So, here's the rundown on the million-dollar questionnaire. You can click on the thumbnails to enlarge. Bonus: Last question is timed, so prepare ahead.

It sure sucks to be TMnet Customer Interaction Centre right now. What many of us forget to realize is that, at the other end of the line, these service reps are people with feelings and, more importantly, jobs to help fill their ricebowl. Before you make any assumption, I do not work for TM and I've never been in the call centre business. But this episode reminds me of a website that publishes Amazon.com's Customer Service phone number. (Backgrounder: Amazon does not display the phone number on its website, which is driving unsatisfied customers mad).

Here's the excerpt, with some adaptation (in italic) for you to think about.

A note about calling *TMnet customer service.
Remember when calling *TMnet customer service that you've got something in common with the representative you'll talk to on the phone. You've both been put in a crappy situation by the management of *TMnet.
When you call the number you may be put on hold for a while. Most call centre operators are not technical experts, but rather rely on prepared scripts. You may be asked to do seemingly obvious tasks which you have attempted before calling the number. Chances are, you're frustrated, angry, and at the end of your rope by the time a customer service rep answers.
But that rep is also feeling the effects of *TMnet's decision. The person on the phone isn't a member of management with decision-making power. They're somebody that needed a job, and they took this one. *TMnet's decision not to adequately train their staffs or employ more technical oriented service engineers means that everybody they talk to is like you: frustrated, angry, and at the end of their rope. It's got to make their job really hard. Wouldn't it suck to have to talk to people who are pissed off all day long for eight hours a day? I'd hate to come to work!
So, when you call, try to keep in mind that you and your customer service rep are in the same boat. You can bet that they're having a terrible day.

OK, straight on, I'm trying to renew my passport but I have no clue on what to do. It is officially expired today but my past two days' attempt at figuring out the system was fruitless. Thank God, someone blogs about it (as always).

So now, with my newfound wisdom, I think I'm ready to conquer the counters. However, a quick look at the Immigration Dept. FAQ wouldn't hurt. That's where I found this little gem:

I had an argument with my wife and she tore my MRP. What should I do to replace that passport? How long will it take to get a new one?
You need to fill in the passport application and the Survey Forms from the Immigration Offices for you to submit your application for replacement. According to the Department's Charter, the replacement process takes about 1 (one) month. ~~If, however, the MRP was torn by your mother-in-law the process will take 1 (one) year or more.~~

The fact that this is one of the frequently asked questions makes you wonder if husbands have a tendency to skip the country whenever they have a fight with the missus.

Ex-national athlete pleads for whipping in place of jail term

KUALA LUMPUR: He represented the country in a game that tests a man's masculinity but it was jail time that finally pushed former national rugby player Mohd Narshidi Mohd Nor over the limit.

The five months and 15 days spent in remand for five counts of cheating involving RM31,750 was a truly frightening lesson for him, so much so that he did not wish to spend one more day behind bars.

“He suffered great mental trauma while he was under remand and he is now scared of jail sentences.

“He has even written a letter to the court stating that he is willing to undergo whipping as long as he is not served a jail term,” said counsel Jasbeer Singh Kaura yesterday after his client pleaded guilty to all the charges.

Mohd Narshidi, 30, who represented Malaysia in the 1998 Commonwealth Games, admitted to committing the offences against Mohd Sharudin Abdullah, 32, Alimi Ahmad, 34, K. Lohanazan, 47, Saiful Izam Bahruddin, 26, and Mazlan Md Yusof, 44, at the 16th floor of Menara Maybank in Jalan Tun Perak around noon on Feb 2.

They five paid him the money after he told them he could get cellphones and laptops for them at a cheaper rate.

Jasbeer Singh, pleading in mitigation, said his client had tried to minimise the victims' losses by delivering some of the items before they lodged a police report.

Prosecuting officer C/Insp Rukumar Ragawan, however, objected to the proposal as the cases involved five different victims who had all suffered losses. He pushed for a sentence that included jail and whipping.

Magistrate Mohd Aimi Zaini Mohd Azhar, who stood down the case for several hours before giving his decision, sentenced Mohd Narshidi to one year's jail and one stroke of the rotan for each of the offences.

He ordered the jail terms to be served concurrently from the date of arrest, which means Mohd Narshidi will have to face another seven months' jail and be caned five times.

I'm so happy.

Never tried. Withdrawn probably due to low ratings. They should revive the Prawn flavour instead.

Tablet PC
Considered a specialty tool, and not enough supporting applications beyond being an e-book.

Only got to try it once. It's nowhere near an authentic taco taste, but those who never experienced Mexican snacks (i.e. the wife) thought it was nice. Nevertheless, they closed shop or moved somewhere else, probably due to low sales. The stall was plain, and I think they should offer free samples to entice and educate customers.

Again, I happened to grab the last issue. It didn't mention anywhere that it was going to discontinue. Perhaps they realised that few read it, so no one would notice its disappearance. Personally, I thought it was quite good.

I was browsing viewtru's archive when I chanced upon the zipper fish post. Immediately, I thought of YKK.

I've always associated YKK with zippers on fake or inferior goods. The true fact is, YKK zippers are everywhere. From bags, pants, and luggage to pencil cases and pillows. As one celebrity fashion designer (I don't remember who, nor am I too happy to admit that I know this stuff) puts it, "even Siti Nurhaliza's $8,000 dress uses YKK zippers".

Did you know that they are the proud owner of ykk.com? And that with 37,081 employees, and activities as diversified as architectural, machinery and R&D, their 2005 net sales is 581,973 million yen? I don't even know how much that figures out in RM, but I'm sure it's A LOT.

Ironically, those who enjoyed the sight of the solar eclipse earlier this month will not be able to see the lunar eclipse since it will occur when the Moon is below the horizon, during the daytime. For central and eastern Asia, Australia and New Zealand, the eclipse comes during Monday evening, during or after dusk. In Malaysia, it can be seen from 8:00pm onwards.

First of all, save the trees - use TMonline.

This is my latest phone bill. Not as bad as some people.

You would think TM would immediately announce this mixup on their website, rather than leave thousands of its user in the dark, grappling for answers among themselves. Or worse, expect them to come to Kedai Telekom (now TMpoint) to resolve the issue.

There's actually a Dispute Line Items on the online statement, but apparently it does not apply to Kredit Atau Caj-Caj Lain.

Me? I'll just hold off paying until the next month, thank you.

May just be a case of some kid trying to be smart. In any case, let's not give him what he wants by NOT clicking on the links. Hint: The pages are all blanks.

Me: That can't be. Have you tried downloading from a different computer?
Customer: Well, actually I need the file urgently. Can you please send the file over?
Me: I can email the attachment again.
Customer: No, I need the file now. Can you please come over and bring me the file?
Me: Err.. sure, Mr. Customer.

Well, to make a long sad story short, I took the half-hour drive through rain and traffic to hand deliver a bleeping floppy diskette.

Customers are always right, but they are bloody idiots most of the time, too.
